About Pagosa Photographer
J.D. Kurz

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, J.D. has always had a love for nature and the outdoors. He became interested in photography at an early age and purchased his first SLR camera (Minolta XG-9) in 4th grade with lawn mowing money he'd saved. When he got his driver's license, he began venturing further away from Denver and deeper into Colorado's Wilderness, where he was able to combine his love of nature, adventure, and photography. During his senior year in high school, J.D. decided to take a photography class (instead of calculus), which inspired him to study every photography book available, including the Ansel Adams Zone System. At 18, J.D. got his first glimpse of the San Juan Mountains during an ascent of Mount Sneffles and decided that he wanted to live somewhere near the rugged range.

While attending Colorado State University, J.D. spent his free-time exploring some of the West's most beautiful places including the Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Yosemite, and Zion. At 19, J.D. had the opportunity to assist John Fielder as a sherpa for a week-long photo expedition in Colorado's Gore Range. In 1999, J.D. completed his degree in Watershed Science and acquired a hydrology position in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Living in Pagosa has allowed him to greatly improve and expand his landscape portfolio and fulfill his dream of living in the San Jaun Mountains.

In 2001, J.D. started a photography business that he operates in addition to his hydrology job. J.D.'s photography services include outdoor portraits, ranch photography, and the creation of limited edition landscape prints. J.D. is also the Assistant Cross Country Coach for Pagosa Springs High School as well as the long-distance Track and Field Coach. In his free time, J.D. enjoys any physical activity that takes him into the backcountry including running, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and skiing.
