East Fork Road to be Temporarily Closed for Repair of Landslide Damage
The East Fork Road (San Juan National Forest Road #667) will be closed to public access for three weekdays in August: Tuesday, August 17; Wednesday, August 18; and Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The closures will allow for the installation of three culverts in conjunction with the repair of a 600-foot section of the road destroyed by a large natural landslide during the spring of 2008.
Repair of the East Fork Road is made possible through funding by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under a cooperative agreement with the Federal Highway Administration. The construction contract has been awarded to J. E. Hurley Construction, Inc. of Colorado Springs. Numerous local subcontractors have been employed for services that include surveying, materials testing, and materials supply and hauling.
The project will focus on slide stabilization in August and September. This will involve the installation of a subsurface drainage system to dewater the slide zone. Once the slide stabilization infrastructure is in place, road reconstruction is expected to begin by mid October, again necessitating closures. The exact dates of these closures will be announced in early October, but will be limited to weekdays between 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This schedule is designed to allow contractors to complete the project, while offering travel windows for the public during hunting season.
Signs will be posted notifying the public of the closures at the west end of the road near the East Fork Campground and at the east end of the road at Elwood Pass. The East Fork Road will be barricaded between mile point 2.7 and mile point 3.4. Accommodations will be made for emergency vehicles. The public is cautioned to be aware that there will be heavy truck traffic between U.S. Highway 160 and the project during the entire construction period.
