ONLINE HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE OFFERED IN DURANGO
DURANGO, Colo. --The Colorado Division of Wildlife is offering an Online Hunter Education Course for Durango-area hunters who need to fulfill their hunter education requirements prior to the start of the 2010 hunting seasons. Pre-registration is required and hunters have until Aug. 9 to sign up for online courses.
Online Hunter Education Courses provide the same information hunters receive in a traditional classroom setting, but are designed to cater to those individuals with unusual schedules or preference for computer-based learning formats.
There are three online programs currently available: The International Hunter Education Association (IHEA) course, and the Today's Hunter and HunterExam.com courses. The IHEA course is free and the other two courses are available for a nominal fee. All courses offer the same material, but students are encouraged to review all three programs before choosing the one that best suits their needs.
After completing all sections of the Internet-based training, participants must attend a one-day "completion class" with a certified hunter education instructor. The completion course includes a final written examination and firearms safe-handling and skills test.
The completion course is scheduled for Aug. 21 at the Florida Grange, 656 Hwy. 172 in Durango. The classroom portion begins at 9 a.m. with the written examination, followed by the shooting-skills test in the afternoon. All testing should be concluded by 5 p.m.
Students must complete and submit all homework from the online course and pass a pre-test prior to attending the classroom-based completion course. Scores on the pre-test will be used to determine how well students read and comprehended the online material. Students who do not pass the pre-test will not be allowed to finish the completion course.
Those interested in participating should contact the DOW's Durango Area Office at (970) 247-0855 to pre-register. The DOW will provide directions for completing the course following pre-registration.
