Kelley Hunt LiveKnown for her live performances, Hunt's voice has been hailed by the LA Daily News as having "...both power and flexibility, so running the gamut from hard-core blues to religious raving to the most vocally sophisticated r&b is a natural enough strategy,"  and Seattle Times called her "...one of the best new songwriters in the genre."   NYC Roots publication Elmore says: "Mercy shifts the focus to her songwriting skills and immense voice." "...a superb live performer, immediately drawing you to the power of her music and her voice..."

In Durango, Hunt will focus on the Mercy release - a new generation of her music; an intense, intentional collision between her righteous roots influences and contemporary overlays with rich veins of political and social commentary threading throughout.

In speaking about this recording, Hunt said "in many ways I feel like this is a project I've been waiting to make for a long time, but that I
Mercy CD imageneeded to make right now. Kind of like purposeful, timely reckless abandon." Mercy is a compelling next step in her artistic evolution and one that incorporates what has come before with stark departures and a sharper focus. She was boiling over in frustration and impatience with some of the politics and social positioning in American and world society and had some definite concepts of how she wanted her ideas expressed musically.

Her band for this date includes guitarist Josh Smith (Raphael Saadiq), drummer Bryan Head (Shelby Lynne, John Doe, Dick Dale, Dead Rock West) and bassist Kenny Ames (Jason and the Scorchers) in addition to Hunt on piano and guitars.

Born in Kansas City, Hunt and her parents dearly loved the music of the Kansas City Jazz/Blues icons of the city's musical "golden age".  Consequently the music was on in their house constantly and had its influence on a young piano player who began playing by ear at age 3.  Although Hunt cites trans-generational vocal, piano and songwriting influences from numerous roots and folk sources, those who know Hunt as an artist and also know the Kansas City musical tradition readily hear the rhythmic piano phrasing, vocal stylings and earthy, direct veracity of Kansas City signatures in her music.  For those with an informed ear it's not unusual to hear Hunt at the most intense musical moments playing complete horn parts on piano reminiscent of the harmonic styles of KC with great feel and at the same time giving a dynamic vocal performance.  That ability to skillfully embody all of an arrangement is one of the things that has endeared her to some of the top-tier musicians and sidemen and Grammy-winning producers she has worked with in the studio through the years.

A favorite in Durango, Hunt's latest recording Mercy has been played on KSUT in Ignatio.
