The day started with Phil riding over the new bridge where... |
he met Mayor Ross Aragon... |
and cut a ribbon officially opening the bridge. Don't try to cross it yet, the ramps are not finished. |
Phil gave a talk about Multiple Sclerosis and the need for support. |
Hermosa Street was lined with Pagosans. Phil and the riders gave "fives" to the cheering fans. |
At a refreshment "pit stop" at Treasure Falls we told him "the hill begins here!" |
Phil,
I'll bet that one day you will see this page, it is linked on your site. I want you to know what a great pleasure it was having you and the CBS team pass through Pagosa Springs and I want you to know where you were.
There are already links on these two pages about the Chimney Rock Area, Wolf Creek Pass and The Great Pagosa Hot Spring.
Many, if not most, bike riders do Nordic skiing during winter. When you were at the Treasure Falls Reststop, photo above, you were standing just above The West Fork Nordic Track. We have other trails here.
You traveled down the highway, from the paved road there are well over a hundred miles of Forest Access Roads all with single / double track trails for mountain biking. Here is a map of our vast trail system.
Is that vacation Jennifer offered sounding good? Norm

Doug Call, long term Pagosa do-gooder, got new hips a year and a half ago and was last but happier than most to summit the divide. |
There was a natural excitement in the thin air with the riders and onlookers spawned by the event and a wonderfully beautiful Pagosa Country day. |
At the summit, Suellen Loher, all nervous and panicked about to face CBS cameras took a snooze on her truck! What a laid-back lady! |
At the top we had a surprise for Phil. We designed an event that "turned the tables" on Phil by putting him in the middle of his own Amazing Race. This is a simulation of the mat he has contestants on the show jump on at the end of each segment. There is always a local / native of the area to say welcome and Phil tells the contestants where they have placed. We even had the Amazing Race theme music playing as the riders arrived. |
Other likely candidates were busy so I played the welcome role. My line was, "Phil, welcome to Wolf Creek Pass, high point of your journey and welcome to Pagosa Country. |
Jennifer Green took over playing the Phil role by announcing he placed first and won this leg of the race. She presented Phil with a check for over $2,000. He said this was the largest amount from any single location so far. He also won a vacation in Pagosa Springs in the future with no cameras or media. We look forward to seeing you Phil. |
We even had a champaign toast to celebrate Phil's visit to Pagosa Springs. Bob Hart did the honors. |
Pagosa's finest were on hand for any emergencies along with Care Flight . |
Once leaving the summit, zoom, they were gone! |
Phil signed the play mat. Thanks to Phil, one of the nicest guys to come down the pike in a long time. |
