Chimney Rock
See the article in Anasazi History for a description of the Chimney Rock Archaeological Area. Many places in the country have “deer warning” signs; not a lot have “elk warning” signs. It is best to slow down and watch carefully as elk can weigh over one thousand pounds!

Capote Lake (ka-po-tea)
Capote Lake rests on Ute Reservation property just east of Chimney Rock and within view of Highway 160, about fifteen miles west of Pagosa Springs. The Utes stock this lake with fish and allow the public to pay a fee for fishing with no need for a Colorado fishing license.

Downtown Pagosa Springs
The scenery just gets better in downtown Pagosa Springs. The beautiful riverfront just across from the historic main street is a beehive of activity both on and around the river. The Hot Springs Resort is to the right and the Chamber of Commerce is to the left. The hill in the background has a hiking trail system and great views of the surrounding mountains.
