Pagosa Springs, Colorado
The Largest Scrub Oak?

by Norm Vance

This old tree is the largest scrub oak tree I have seen in the area. It is located along the Eight Mile Mesa Road south of Pagosa. It is about eighteen inches across and is still alive.

It has an old faded forest service sign nailed into its side denoting it as a tree to be protected (not cut or harmed) for its wildlife habitat potential. The two places where branches once grew are hollowed out and birds flit in and out. Untold generations of birds, squirrels and other animals have lived here. Surely Walt Disney could have made an epic film about this tree’s wildlife history.
